David Hartung, 82, of Eureka died June 5, 2025, in St. Louis. Mr. Hartung loved sharing the story of meeting his wife at a wedding when he asked to swap bridesmaids so that he could walk the aisle with Barbara. Together, they shared many memories raising their children in the Shaw neighborhood in south St. Louis City. He enjoyed the city life, whether it was attending sporting events, grilling on their deck, going to Ted Drewes on hot summer days and to get a Christmas tree in the winter or walking in the Missouri Botanical Garden. He was a successful hobby gardener, sharing his Big Boy tomatoes with family and neighbors. After a long career with Union Pacific Railroad, he retired to be an active part of his grandchildren's lives. He recently enjoyed watching Carly and Emma graduate from St. Louis University in May of 2025. He was an avid sports fan and was passionate about Cardinal baseball. He enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia and running sports memorabilia conventions. He loved chatting about his favorite sports players, reminiscing about favorite trips, including an Alaskan cruise, trips to Oxford, Miss, and to Florida, spending time with his family and enjoying playing cards with his brother and friends at Victorian Gardens in Eureka. Born June 3, 1943, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Marie (Hofer) Hartung and Carl “Buddy” Hartung.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years: Barbara (Flatt) Hartung; three children: Jill Munoz, Beth Hartung and David (Jenny) Hartung Jr.; three grandchildren: Carly Marie Munoz, Emma Elizabeth Hartung and Rowan Jackson Hartung; a younger brother: Jim; a niece: Carrie; many cousins; and numerous other family members and friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 5347 Donovan Ave., in St. Louis. A luncheon will immediately follow. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home in Ballwin.
