Shinnick, Cecilia

Cecilia Ann (Missel) Hogan Shinnick, 94, of Hillsboro died March 23, 2026, in Crystal City. Mrs. Shinnick and her husband, Edward, moved to Hillsboro in 1960, where they ran a small farm just north of town. They grew their own food, butchered their own meat and steadily built onto their home to make room for their growing family. She was a pianist, artist and seamstress. She was a follower of Christ and spent many years as a Ladies Auxiliary member and quilter with the Knights of Columbus in Hillsboro. She was also a longtime member of Good Shepherd Parish. She enjoyed caring for children, tending to her garden, canning fruits and vegetables, creating art and music and helping those in need. Well into her 90s, she continued volunteering, including sewing clothes for families in need in Haiti. She ran her own wedding cake business in Hillsboro for many years and made her own wine. She loved quilting, sewing, solving puzzles, watching movies, crafting dollhouses and miniatures and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After the death of Edward, she later married her second husband, Richard, and gained a stepdaughter. She was known for her resilience, generosity, love and creativity. She will be remembered for her love of the arts, appreciation of life and strong faith. Born March 30, 1931, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of the late Frank Joseph Missel and the late Mary Cecilia (Lause) Missel.

She was preceded in death by her first husband: Edward Wallace Hogan; and her second husband: Richard John Shinnick Jr.

She is survived by 11 children: Diane Hogan of St. Louis, Stephen Hogan of Albuquerque, N.M., Elaine Pope of Arlington, Texas; Cecilia (Randy) Govero of Festus, Anne (Tom) Matoushek of Sunset Hills, Mark Hogan of Festus, Frank (Mary) Hogan of De Soto, Daniel Hogan of Tacoma, Wash., Joan Rodriguez of Festus, Betsy (Chris) Noack of Hillsboro and Faye (Shane) Maue of Hillsboro; a stepdaughter: Vicky (Jeff) Daniels of St. Louis; a sister-in-law: Lois Missel; 33 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

She also was preceded in death by two children: Barbara Anderson and Tommy Hogan; three grandchildren: Justin Burton Anderson, Elicia Marie Hogan and Hana Cecilia Maue; five siblings: Rose Mary Henslick, Bernadine Wentz, Donald Missel, Louise Lamprecht and Eugene Missel.

A funeral Mass was held March 31 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Hillsboro. Burial followed in Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Knights of Columbus 6401. Arrangements were under the direction of Chapel Hill Mortuary, Robert Brown Chapel, in Hillsboro.
