Whitener, Jessie

Jessie Mae Whitener, 79, of House Springs, formerly of Imperial, died Oct. 1, 2016, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mrs. Whitener was a homemaker and volunteered with the Jefferson County Food Pantry in Pevely. She enjoyed crocheting, dancing and collecting angels. Born Feb. 25, 1937, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of the late George and Gella (Evans) Baker. She was preceded in death by two former husbands: Hubert E. Massey and Earl T. Whitener.

She is survived by two sons: Hervey (Linda) Massey of House Springs and Kenneth (Chris) Hodo of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter: Gella (Dan) Stewart of Oregon; a brother: Rodney (Barbara) Baker of Festus; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son: George Massey; a daughter: Tina Mae Lammert; two brothers: Edward Baker and Thomas Baker; and two sisters: Frances Ard and Billie Jean Bowen.

Visitation is scheduled from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Mahn Twin City Chapel, 515 Collins, in Festus. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Jim Owens. Burial is in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahn Twin City Chapel.
