2 p.m. UPDATE: A Hillsboro High School student was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, April 29, after being found with a gun.
District officials said administrators were notified that a student may have been in possession of a weapon. The student was quickly located by school resource officers and found to be in possession of an unloaded handgun and ammunition.
Hillsboro Police Chief Darrick Curtis said on April 30 that the student was removed from class without incident and taken to the Jefferson County Juvenile Detention Center in Hillsboro where the student remains in custody.
Curtis said there is no evidence to suggest a current or ongoing threat to the high school campus. He said no additional information will be released because the student is a juvenile.
He said the school resource officers are continuing to work closely with the juvenile office to complete additional elements of the investigation.
In a letter sent to parents and staff Wednesday, Superintendent Jon Isaacson said there was no active threat to students or staff, and there was no indication that the student brought the weapon to campus with the intent to harm others.
Isaacson also said the school district is continuing to work closely with the Hillsboro Police Department to ensure the safety of all students and staff until the investigation is finished.
According to Isaacson’s letter, district policy states a violation involving a firearm can carry punishment ranging from superintendent-level suspension to expulsion.
