A Columbia man arrested after an hours-long standoff with police Thursday night had failed to return to jail following a court-approved hospital release, according to court documents.

Brian Strickland, 58, was taken into custody around 8 p.m. Thursday on Parkade Boulevard after Columbia police attempted to serve him an arrest warrant earlier in the afternoon, according to court documents.

Officers first tried to arrest Strickland at about 3 p.m. on a felony stalking charge. However, he barricaded himself inside a residence, triggering a prolonged standoff and prompting SWAT teams to be called, according to court documents.

Strickland is being held in the Boone County Jail as of Friday afternoon, according to court documents.

Court records show Strickland had previously been arrested April 10 on a warrant for first-degree stalking. The following day, a judge granted him a medical furlough, ordering him to return to jail after being discharged from the hospital around 2 p.m, according to court documents.

Prosecutors said Strickland never returned and a warrant for his arrest was issued later that night.

Strickland’s defense team asked the court to recall the warrant on April 13, but a judge denied the request on April 15. That same day, prosecutors filed additional charges of second-degree kidnapping and fourth-degree assault.

According to a probable cause statement, the charges stem from a Feb. 15 incident in which Strickland allegedly threatened to kill someone and “shoot up” their vehicle. Investigators said he sent dozens of messages making threats, according to the statement.
