A Columbia man was arrested in connection with a June fire that left another man dead.
Brandon Butchkoski, 47, was arrested Thursday on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree arson, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.
Just before midnight on June 15 in the 1500 block of Paris Road, Butchkoski allegedly set Donovan Baylis, 31, and the porch of a residence on fire.
According to previous KOMU 8 reporting, investigators said someone poured an accelerant on Baylis before setting him and the porch on fire.
Baylis died of injuries he suffered in the fire nearly a month after the attack.
According to the news release, Butchkoski had also allegedly attempted to set the residence on fire again on June 29, leaving minor property damage.
On July 3, he was arrested on a charge of first-degree arson in connection with the second fire.
Butchkoski, a homeless man, has had several prior drug arrests, has resisted arrest and has been arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm, according to court documents.
Butchkoski had his bond set on Sept. 8 and posted on Sept. 9, according to court documents.
The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the Columbia Police Department at 573-874-7652.
