A dog and a cat died in a Jan. 15 mobile home fire on Hwy. JJ south of De Soto, De Soto Rural Fire Chief Tom Fitzgerald said.
He said firefighters were dispatched at 9:08 a.m. to a home in the 13300 block of Hwy. JJ.
Fitzgerald said the homeowners were not home at the time of the fire and no humans were injured. He said two other cats are missing and may have escaped from the mobile home.
Fitzgerald said a bathroom and bedroom were heavily damaged by fire, and there was heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the home. He said as of Monday, the cause of the fire had not been determined but it may have started in an electrical switch.
Firefighters remained on the scene until about 11 a.m.
Hematite, Jefferson R-7 and Hillsboro fire protection districts and Festus and De Soto fire departments assisted with the fire. Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District also responded. Big River, Dunklin, St. Clair and Mapaville fire protection districts assisted with other calls.
