Joshua Dyle, 47, of the Festus area has been charged for allegedly stealing a car from a De Soto woman after he sold her the car. Dyle allegedly told police the woman did not pay him for the car, but the woman said she paid him $800, court records show.
Dyle was arrested on July 17. As of Monday, he was being held on a $7,500 bond in the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, according to court documents.
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on July 17 charged Dyle with stealing, a class D felony, which is punishable by up to seven years in prison. However, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has requested the charge be considered a class C felony, which carries a penalty of three to 10 years in prison, because Dyle is a persistent offender who has been found guilty of at least two prior felonies, court records said.
De Soto Police were called on June 12, 2024, by the woman who said she purchased a 2006 Hyundai Elantra from Dyle. She told police Dyle and herself signed the title, but Dyle had taken the title with him after the deal was complete, the case’s probable-cause statement said.
A man told police he saw Dyle and woman sign the title, and that the woman paid Dyle. He also said Dyle allegedly contacted him after the sale and said he was going to file for a lost title and resell the Elantra, the report said.
Dyle previously has been found guilty of second-degree assault in May 2001 in Jefferson County and of possession of a controlled substance in March 2013 in St. Louis County, according to court records.
