Feb. 16 UPDATE: The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office released the names of a woman found dead Feb. 14 at a home in Fenton and the name of the suspect, who apparently killed himself Feb. 15 at a Festus hotel.
The victim was Marijon Ludwig, 46, whose body was found stabbed and shot about 5 p.m. Feb. 14 at a home in the 2600 block of Winding Valley Drive in the Jefferson County part of Fenton, according to a written statement from the Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect was Billy Moman, 69, who authorities said apparently shot himself to death. His body was found about 8 a.m. Feb. 15 at the Holiday Inn Express, 1802 Gamel Cemetery Road,
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell said. A gunshot was heard about 7 a.m., authorities reported.
Ludwig and Moman knew each other, but their relationship is not clear, the statement said.
Authorities used caution in the situation, including evacuating guests and employees from the hotel, as Moman “had previously done time in a Minnesota prison for murder” the Sheriff’s Office statement said.
“They used a drone to determine he was deceased,” Bissell said.
He said detectives, SWAT and negotiators were at the hotel overnight attempting to take Moman into custody.
“They tracked him to the Festus hotel about 9 p.m. (Feb. 14),” he said. “They evacuated the hotel. Detectives and negotiators made contact with him, but the negotiations (did not succeed).”
Guests at the hotel were transported by bus overnight to a Festus R-6 school while negotiations took place with the man, Bissell said. They were bused back to the hotel sometime after 8 a.m. today, he said.
He said law enforcement had received a call about 5 p.m. Feb.14 about a woman’s body being found in a home in the 2600 block of Winding Bluffs in the Jefferson County part of Fenton.
“It started as a call on a death,” Bissell said. “It became evident it was a murder. The suspect was tracked to the Holiday Inn in Festus.”
No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident, he said.
He said the investigation is ongoing.
“Detectives worked diligently to quickly locate the suspect,” Sheriff Dave Marshak said in the statement. “From the first officers on the homicide scene to the crime scene unit and SWAT, success came from a team effort. The crime scene was violent, and considering the suspect’s history, this incident ended the best way possible.”
The Sheriff’s Office statement thanked the Festus Police Department and Huskey Trailways for their assistance in transporting evacuated hotel guests and Festus R-6 for providing “a safe place for the guests to stay overnight.”
