During the week of Aug. 16, the Jefferson County Health Department inspected 35 food establishments. Scores ranged from 71-100.
The inspection scores for the week of Aug. 16 are listed below. They are all routine inspections unless otherwise noted. Facilities considered low priority are not assigned a score. A low priority facility does not prepare food.
■ Baymont by Wyndham breakfast kitchen, 1200 W. Gannon Drive, Festus, was reinspected on Aug. 19. No score given.
■ Cedar Hill Elks Lodge, 8430 Industrial Drive, Cedar Hill, scored 95 on Aug. 21. Violations: scoops stored in dry products with handle down; and deep gouges in flooring near drain/drain cover needs to be reaffixed/holes in wall and ceiling.
■ Circle K, 2001 Richardson Road, Arnold, scored 99 on Aug. 20. Violation: spilled soda on floor under soda box area.
■ Community Improvement Association of Jefferson County, 13468 Hwy. JJ, De Soto, scored 92 on Aug. 17. Violations: rodent droppings in all under sink cabinets; leaking drainpipe; and holes in all under sink cabinets.
■ Cracker Barrel, 1193 Scenic Drive, Herculaneum, was reinspected on Aug. 17. No score given.
■ Cwic C’s, 1245 American Legion Drive, scored 94 on Aug. 18. Violations: burrito mix in refrigerator without lid; box of napkins stored on floor; no caulking behind sink; and water dripping in refrigerator/walk-in freezer evaporator unit aggressively screeching.
■ Daddy O’s Cheesesteaks food cart scored 90 on Aug. 21. Violations: Food handler didn’t wash hands for at least 10 seconds; hand sink needs repairs; and soiled exterior of grill and cart.
■ Fellowship First Baptist Church and Preschool, 2735 High Ridge Blvd., High Ridge, scored 97 on Aug. 19. Violations: gap in coving; dead insects under dish sink; and soiled hood system and shelving in island cabinets.
■ For Kids Only, 5432 Hwy. 61-67, Imperial, scored 99 on Aug. 20. Violation: dead insects in light guards.
■ Grace Pointe Learning Center, 4568 Church Road, House Springs, scored 91 on Aug. 20. Violations: no paper towels in boy’s restroom; rodent droppings in lower cabinets; and hot water at wrong temperature.
■ Happy Time Daycare, 1770 Missouri State Road, Arnold, scored 100 on Aug. 20.
■ High on the Hog Custom Meats, 9145 Ridge Road, Dittmer, scored 99 on Aug. 20. Violation: dusty condenser unit.
■ Hope Lutheran Church and Early Childhood Center, 2308 Gravois Road, High Ridge, was inspected on Aug. 19. No score given due to low priority.
■ Iguana’s Mexican Grill, 909 N. Truman Blvd., Crystal City, scored 71 on Aug. 19. Violations: no proof of any food safety certifications; no employee illness policy; pitcher sitting inside hand sink; no sanitizer in dish machine due to problem with tubing; unlabeled spray bottle; uncovered pans in cooler and freezer/packages of meat stored under evaporator and covered in ice; standing water in beer cooler/ice around evaporator and ice on floor of walk-in freezer; chipped spatula; restroom door not self-closing; and holes in walls/missing coving.
■ Imo’s Pizza, 600 Jeffco Blvd., Arnold, scored 84 on Aug. 21. Violations: incorrect sanitizer solution; dishwasher not dispensing sanitizer/gaskets in disrepair; soiled gaskets; dish sink leaking; and women’s restroom door not self-closing.

■ La Quinta Inn & Suites, 1001 Veterans Blvd., Festus, scored 95 on Aug. 18. Violations: an employee without food safety certification; manager without manager food safety certification; and missing caulking.
■ Miyabi Sushi and Steak House, 892 Arnold Commons Drive, Arnold, scored 84 on Aug. 19. Violations: incorrect sanitizer solution; ice machine baffle soiled; back door not latching; scoop handle in contact with ice; containers stacked wet; torn gaskets/soup ladle handle in disrepair/cooler in disrepair; and faucet leaking.

■ Wallis Petroleum, 3611 W. Outer Road, Arnold, scored 85 on Aug. 20. Violations: racks stored in hand sink; incorrect sanitizer in dish sink; damaged cabinets; and hand sink leaking water from waste pipe.
■ Wayside, 5150 Hwy. 100, Eureka, scored 99 on Aug. 21. Violation: gap in door.
■ Wendy’s Restaurant, 989 Jeffco Blvd., Arnold, scored 93 on Aug. 20. Violations: dishes stacked wet; ice machine lid and walk-in cooler wall in disrepair; and dusty vent filters.

How establishments are scored
According to the Jefferson County Health Department, facilities start with a score of 100, and points are reduced based on observed violations:
■ Six points are deducted for priority violations that directly contribute to foodborne illness risk.
■ Three points are deducted for priority foundation violations that indirectly contribute to foodborne illness risk or enable priority violations.
■ One point for core violations related to general sanitation and good retail practices.
■ Two points for repeat violations of any type.
Dan Kane, environmental supervisor for the Health Department, said the agency does not have ranges for good or bad scores but instead looks at the overall score, adding that readers need to look at the types of violations.
He said a couple of priority violations are more concerning than several core violations.
In certain cases, the Health Department returns to a food establishment to reinspect, allowing time for the facility to correct issues. According to the Health Department, reinspection is not solely based on the score an establishment gets; it’s determined by the type of violation. Priority and priority foundation violations need to be corrected within a certain amount of time, and priority violations typically are corrected on the day of the inspection before the inspector leaves.
Kane said the department rarely closes a food establishment, and most temporary closures involve a power outage, fire or sewage backup.
