Crystal City Mayor Mike Osher, Festus Mayor Sam Richards and Hillsboro Mayor Buddy Russell spent some time behind bars July 11 as part of a fundraising event held at the Walmart store, 650 S. Truman Blvd.
Each of the mayors spent a couple of hours in mock jail cells in different parts of the store as people they knew or just passersby donated cash to the Children’s Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis, which raises funds and awareness for Children's Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, both in St. Louis.
During the event, Russell raised $2,156, Richards brought in $431 and Osher raised $216.
“It wasn’t really a competition,” Russell said. “It was all for Children’s Miracle Network. Walmart has been a big sponsor of Children’s Miracle Network. They approached me about doing it, and I felt it was a good cause. I did more stuff online (beyond the event) and got friends to donate.”
He brought in $1,750 donated online.
Richards also said he was happy to take part in the fundraiser for the charitable organization.
“People were friendly, and they contributed,” he said. “It was a good cause. I saw a lot of people I knew.”
Osher said he, too, enjoyed the experience.
“The Children’s Miracle Network is a great organization,” Osher said. “They help out kids. It’s a great cause.
“If they asked me to do it again, I would.”
Krista Lucy, executive director of the Children’s Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis, said she appreciated all those who took part in and donated to the cause.
“Walmart associates and customers went above and beyond, raising more funds for programs and services insurance does not cover, vital equipment and major hospital renovations, which helps create more miracles for sick children in our neighborhoods,” Lucy said.
Brooke Welton, a Walmart coach, said the fundraiser was a success.
“I would like to thank all the mayors involved for rallying their communities and helping raise money for Children’s Miracle Network,” she said.
