Crystal City Mayor Tom Schilly, far right, throws an ax during the Mayor's Challenge this morning, and Festus Mayor Sam Richards, in ballcap, looks on.

Twin City Days is underway, but plenty of fun is still in store today (Sept. 10) and Saturday (Sept. 11).

The event kicked off Thursday afternoon (Sept. 9) with a golf tournament at Oak Valley Golf Course in Pevely.

Later on Thursday, the Twin City Days Trivia Night was held at Festus High School.

While the crowd was small, the competition was hot, as four teams faced off in the contest. Coming away with a hard-fought victory and 80 points was a team that calls itself “The Winners.”

The winning team included Marc Gerst, Denise Gerst, Peggy Koenen, Glenn Koenen, Robert Roth, Ricki Roth, Josie Roth and Kelsie O’Toole.

Leader Publications sponsored the event, which raised almost $200 for CASA of Jefferson County, a group that provides court-appointed advocates for children who have been abused or neglected.

 Mayor’s Challenge

For the seventh year, Crystal City captured the Twin City Days Mayor’s Challenge title this morning, with Mayor Tom Schilly out hurling Festus Mayor Sam Richards 25-5 in an ax-throwing competition.

The contest was held during the Twin City Days Breakfast, held at Larry G. Crites Memorial Park in Festus.

Schilly appeared ready to shut-out the Festus mayor, who didn’t score until the final throw. The pair of city leaders each threw a bulls-eye to end the contest.

Schilly said follow-through is the secret to his ax-throwing success. In fact, he said, follow-through is key to almost every sport and to good local government.

Richards said a little friendly rivalry was a fun way to kick off the Twin City Days festivities this morning.

Richards took his loss in stride. “Sometimes you hit a home run. Sometimes you don’t,” he said.

The Seniors in the Park event also was held today at the Larry Crites Park.
