BNSF train

A dump truck was struck by a train in Horine on Wednesday afternoon (June 14). Fortunately no one was hurt, said Lt. Gary Higginbotham of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

“A BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe) train clipped a dump truck at the tracks at Front Street in Horine about 1 p.m.,” Higginbotham said. “There were no injuries reported. The train was pulling 98 cars, some carrying hazardous materials. There was no spill, no derailment. The dump truck was loaded with 20 tons of stone.”

He said the train sustained minor damage and the dump truck was damaged, but he did not know how badly.

It was the second vehicle struck by a train in Jefferson County this month. On June 6, an Amtrak passenger train hit a Jeep Grand Cherokee at tracks on Sulphur Springs Landing in Sulphur Springs. Authorities also described that accident as a vehicle “clipped” by a train, and luckily, there were no serious injuries reported in that accident either.
