Not to be outdone by the baseball team, the Jefferson College softball team smacked five home runs in its doubleheader Friday against East Central College and won both games.

On Thursday, the Viking baseball team hit five homers and swept St. Louis Community College in its doubleheader. The two Jefferson College powerhouses have won 30 games each.

"We want to support them as much as we can and they do the same thing for us,” Jefferson College softball coach Tony Cook said after the Vikings beat the Falcons 8-2 in game one and 7-1 in game two. The games were made up from a rainout earlier this season.

In both games against the Falcons, the Jefferson College starting pitcher went the distance. Shelby Clark was the winning pitcher in the first game and she struck out the last two batters in the seventh inning. She’s 6-4 this season. Taylor Nordwald picked up her team-leading 12th win of the season in the second game. Nordwald didn’t allow a base runner in the last three innings.

Libby Marko, Paige Kurtz and Kaylee Sheridan hit home runs in the first game, and Elanna Osthoff and Kelsi Gmerek had round trippers in game two. Osthoff leads the Vikings with 12 home runs.

Gmerek, Kurtz and Abby Meyers all doubled in the second inning of game two, and Gmerek and Kurtz scored in the inning to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.
