When two players on the same team record double-doubles in a game, that’s usually a recipe for success.
That was the case at West County High School in Park Hills on Monday night when senior forward Natalee Moore and junior center Anna Belle Wakeland each had a double-double in points and rebounds that helped Grandview advanced to the Class 3 District 3 girls basketball championship after beating Greenville 65-42.
“Having two players with double-doubles in one game is a rarity for a lot of teams and even more rare for us,” Grandview head coach Tim Winkler said. “Anna Belle and Natalee did a great job of working together on several occasions. When you have two players combine to score 36 points and grab 28 rebounds, I’d take that any day of the week and twice on Sundays.”
The Eagles improved to 16-7 this season and are the No. 3 seed in District 3. Grandview is scheduled to play number-one seeded West County (21-4) in the district championship on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting. The Bulldogs are 4-0 against teams from Jefferson County this season but have not played the Eagles.
Wakeland made 9 of 16 shots from the field and finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds to go with five assists and five blocks. She has a double-double in all but a handful of games this season, and her single-game highs are 25 rebounds against Pacific in December and 26 points – twice. Moore scored 15 points to go with 13 rebounds and six assists in the semifinals. She grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds against St. Paul in January.
Freshman point guard Catherine Wakeland made five of the six 3-point baskets for the Eagles and had 19 points and seven steals.
