Roberta Smith, 82, of De Soto died Sept. 16, 2022, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Ms. Smith worked as a cook for several nursing homes, including Festus Manor, Crystal Oaks and Autumn Ridge. She enjoyed bowling, playing bingo and spending time with her family. Born Sept. 29, 1939, in Marion, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Myrtle “Linnie” (Mack) McCormack and Alexander Shadowens.
She is survived by five children: Carolyn (the late Raymond) Blaylock of Crystal City, Karen Smith of De Soto, Christine (Bryan) Wilson of Festus, Teresa (Christopher) Hopkins of De Soto and Wallace Daniel (Deanna) Smith Jr.; 15 grandchildren: Amanda White, Stephen Blaylock, Latasha (Sonny) Cummings, Dusty Moon Jr., Patricia Turner, Veronica (Timothy) Guenther, Britney (Dustin) Gassier, Corey Gassier, Rachel (Justin) Faulkner, Justine Wedde, Seth DeClue, Austin Smith, Jessica Hicks, Destiney Hicks and Megan (Christopher) Lynn; 22 great-grandchildren Zachary and Michael White, Jessica, Kilie, Braydon and Hanna Cummings, Zoey and Zalee Blaylock, Hayden and Kylee Turner, Bentley and Avery Guenther, Cheyenne and Ronin Kincade, Camryn Carrow, Easton, Ava and Bindi Faulkner, Dylan Koenig, Remington and Lexington Lynn, and Lee Ann Dobbs; one great-great-grandchild: Braxton White; and many other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Leonard (the late Etha) Shadowens and Edward (the late Mary) Shadowens; two sisters: Opal (the late Kenneth) Graves and Floella “Jeannie” (the late Donald) Schwartz; and a granddaughter: Felicia Gassier.
Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. until a funeral service at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus, officiated by Pastor Rick Pirtle. Burial is in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crystal City. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
