James C. “Sam” DeVoto, 87, of De Soto died Dec. 6, 2020, at Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis. Mr. DeVoto was a member of American Legion Post 253, Amvets Post 42 and the Mississippi River Eagles. Born Oct. 22, 1933, in Live Oak, Fla., he was the son of Janie Carolyn (Martin) and Joseph DeVoto.
He is survived by a son: James “Jay” (Megan) DeVoto of De Soto; a daughter: Jodie (Mike) Hawkins of Imperial; nine grandchildren: James Tyler and Zane Lewis DeVoto, Olivia (Jake) Smith, Yvonne (Kevin) Rice, Brad and Tess (Blake Shaw) Edmonds, Wyatt Fitzpatrick and Sam and Nicole (Matt) Hawkins; 13 great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Joseph William DeVoto; and a grandson: Michael K. Hawkins, Jr.
Private services were held at the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Arrangements were under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home, Festus.
