George O. Jones, 90, of St. Louis died Feb. 6, 2021, in St. Louis. Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He worked for Defense Mapping for more than 25 years, and after retirement, he worked the meat counter at Schnucks. He was ordained in 1964 and served as an elder in Community of Christ and was a longtime member of Harmony (Gala). He was known for his strong faith and kindness and often visited with people who were sick or dying or imprisoned. He and his late wife were generous and opened their home to strangers, as well as a child from Honduras for several years while he was receiving treatment at Shriner’s Hospital. Mr. Jones enjoyed spending time with family, friends and animals, as well as gardening, church music, BLTs, chocolate milk shakes, pecan pie, homemade cranberry sauce and popcorn. He was the son of the late Grover and Harriet Jones.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Mary Fanella Jones.
He is survived by three children: G. Andrew “Drew” (Charlinda) Jones, Tim (Annapurna) Jones and Ruth (Betsy Green) Richardson; seven grandchildren: Brandy Gair, Corrin (Larry Sherman) Drones, Kyle (Amanda Blanton) Richardson, Kendra Richardson, Kari Richardson, Dimitri Jones and Divya Jones; seven great-grandchildren: Marcus, Savanna, Sidney, Miles, Chezza, Larry and Micah; a brother: James “Jay” Jones; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Cleatus Lorene Schmitz.
Services will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements are under the direction of John L. Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral Homes in St. Louis County.
