Freda G. Turnbough, 96, Festus

Freda G. Turnbough, 96, of Festus died Jan. 19, 2021, at her home. Mrs. Turnbough graduated from Belgrade High School, earned a teaching certificate and began teaching at Czar School in Crawford County at 17. While teaching, she earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in Columbia. She retired from Festus Elementary School in 1983. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Festus/Crystal City, the Missouri Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 394 in Belgrade and PEO Chapter EH.

Born Oct. 31, 1924, in Belgrade, she was the daughter of the late Mary Etna (Hogan) and Lawrence Theodore Barr.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years: Norman Edward Turnbough; a son: Joseph Edward (the late Donna) Turnbough; a daughter: Mary Margaret (Dean) Dunn: two granddaughters: Rachel (Denny) Foster and Emily (Justin) Lammert; five great-grandchildren: Lucas and Cole Foster, and Bennett, Josephine and Audrey Lammert, all of Festus, as well as many other family members, friends and former students.

She also was preceded in death by her grandparents: Mary E. (Morrison) and Dr. Russel Barr, and Rachel Ann (Gregory) and Campbell Hogan; three sisters; and a brother, who lost his life in World War II.

A public visitation will be from 9-10:30 a.m. Friday (Jan. 22) at Vinyard Funeral Home, 616 W. Main St., in Festus. Private funeral services and burial will be in Caledonia Methodist Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the food pantry or stained glass window fund at the First United Methodist Church of Festus/Crystal City. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home.
