Coffey, Donald

Donald L. Coffey Sr., 91, of Bonne Terre died May 28, 2020, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Mr. Coffey was retired from General Motors, and loved to say he was “retired longer than he worked.” He was also a cattle farmer and raised tobacco. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member and past master  of Stafford Lodge 562 F & AM in Fitchburg, Ky., a member of UAW Local 2164 and loved hunting and fishing. Born July 4, 1928, in Hamilton, Ohio, he was the son of the late James Harold Coffey and Myrtle (Cox) Hartsock and the stepson of the late Roscoe Hartsock. He was preceded in death by his wife: Paula J. (Carter) Coffey.

He is survived by three daughters: Wanda “Bittie” (John) Peters of De Soto, Sharleen (Mike) Peters of Bonne Terre and Kathy Wilson of Richmond, Ky.;a brother: Harold Coffey of St. James; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son: Donald “Bug” Coffey Jr.; a brother: Nelson Coffey; a grandson: Jerry Michael Peters; and a great-grandson: Josh Politte.

Visitation is at 4 p.m. and a funeral service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, May 31, at Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home, 220 N. Main St., in De Soto. Private burial was in the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks. Arrangements were under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home.
