Hampel, Charles

Charles David Hampel, 74, of Crystal City died Dec. 15, 2020, at Scenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Herculaneum. Mr. Hampel was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of First United Methodist Church in Festus. He was a retired mail carrier for the Crystal City Post office, and worked as the bar manager at Poppy’s Restaurant in Crystal City for more than 30 years. He was a member of Elks Lodge 1721, Moose Lodge and American Legion Post 253, and was a huge St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues and Mizzou fan. Born March 14, 1946, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Louis and Lucille E. (Toulouse) Hampel.

He is survived by a stepdaughter: Lisa St. Clair of Festus; two nieces: Cynthia (Philip) Moseid of Barnhart and Ann (the late Kevin) Schanz of Crystal City; two great-nieces: Lindsey Rug and Katelynn Smreker; a great-nephew: Andrew Smreker; and a sister-in-law: Inez Hampel of Festus.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Donald Hampel.

A graveside service with full military honors will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 21, in Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crystal City, officiated by Pastor Terry Crank. Arrangements are under the direction of Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus.
