Betty Marler-Schmitt, 84, of Festus died July 28, 2022, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mrs. Marler-Schmitt was a homemaker. Born Oct. 23, 1937, in Rogersville, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Clayton Charlie Bates and Effie Gertrude (Lovell) Bates Dismukes and the stepdaughter of the late J.D. Dismukes. She was preceded in death by her first husband: Radie L. Marler .
She is survived by her husband: Fred Schmitt of Festus; four children: Rhonda (Tom) Alexander of Festus, Roger Marler of Bonne Terre, Patricia Beaman of Festus and Denise McMullin of Festus; a sister: Gail (Mike) Guilfoyle of Low Point, Ill.; four siblings-in-law: Gene (Nancy) Schmitt of Festus, Freddie (Karen) Schmitt of Bonne Terre, Chris (Pam) Schmitt of Hillsboro and Samantha Schmitt of Festus; 10 grandchildren: Keith, David, Brian, Kirstie, Sharon, Carolyn, Michelle, Melissa, Angela and Christina; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law: Mike Beaman; a brother: Deral Bates; and a grandson: Roger.
Visitation is scheduled from 3 p.m. until a funeral service at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home, 220 N. Main St., in De Soto, officiated by Don Bahr. Burial is in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Urbana. Arrangements are under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home.
