Missouri Big Band voclaist Joe Scalzitti performs at an event in June.

The Swingin’ Under the Stars concert the city of Festus postponed two months ago is now set to be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at Larry G. Crites Memorial Park along Old Hwy. A.

In addition, the city’s outdoor film series, Movies Under the Stars, which had its first scheduled showing cancelled on July 15, will resume at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Crites Park, with the screening of a different movie.

Both the concert and the movie are free and open to the public and will be held at the park’s main stage.

Swingin’ Under the Stars will showcase the music of the MOBB (Missouri Big Band) featuring vocalist Joe Scalzitti and under the direction of Joe Pappas.

The concert originally was scheduled for May 14 but was postponed due to weather forecasts calling for storms.

Barb Lowry, the Festus recreation and tourism director, said weather did not play a part in the cancellation of the July 15 movie night, which was supposed to feature “Encanto.”

“There was a problem with the company providing the projector,” she said. “Swank Motion Pictures will give us a credit for a year and we’ll plan to show ‘Encanto’ next summer.”

When the movie series resumes on July 29, the film, “Elf,” will be shown. Then, “Top Gun: Maverick” is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 12.

All films are scheduled to begin at dark, Lowry said.

Lowry said the theme for the Aug. 12 showing is “date night.”

“There will be a couple of food trucks there that night,” she said.

For all of the outdoor events, attendees may bring their own lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets.

The Festus Tourism Commission sponsors the concert and the movie series.
