Columbia Police have arrested a 66-year-old Columbia man in connection with a fatal shooting that happened Saturday night on North Garth Avenue.
According to the Columbia Police Department, officers arrested Michael Graham in suspicion of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, stealing, possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence.
Police said the victim, Vasshon Haywood, 48, of Columbia, died at a local hospital from injuries sustained in the shooting. Authorities confirmed that Haywood’s next of kin has been notified.
One person shot at central Columbia apartment building Saturday night
As previously reported by KOMU 8, police responded to a shots-fired call in the 700 block of North Garth Avenue on Saturday night. Officers found one person with life-threatening gunshot injuries and provided emergency care before the victim was taken to a local hospital.
In Saturday night’s initial response, police said one person was taken into custody and there is no longer a threat to the public.
