A former Cooper County court deputy accused of neglecting medical care for an inmate will face a bench trail beginning Sept. 22, according to court documents.

Rachel Atherton, along with former Lt. Robyn Pfeiffer, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in March 2024 in connection to 33-year-old Brooklyn Bailey's death.

The bench trial will be held at the Boone County Courthouse.

Atherton waived her right to a jury trial, meaning a judge will determine the outcome of her case.

Bailey was found dead in her jail cell from untreated diabetes on Oct. 27, 2023, according to court documents.

Atherton and Pfeiffer were charged after failing to provide Bailey medical attention and allegedly telling others not to help her, according to past reporting.

Pfeiffer was sentenced on April 3 to three years in prison after a judge denied her motion for a new trial.

Bailey was being held in the jail because she was awaiting transfer to the Missouri Department of Mental Health, which was full. Her mother said that Bailey had been charged with tampering with a motor vehicle in 2021.
