Shoppers looking to upgrade their appliances may save some money during the Show Me Green Sales Tax Holiday.
The Missouri Department of Revenue announced this year’s tax holiday will be from April 19-25.
During that time, shoppers will not have to pay state and local sales tax on qualifying energy-efficient appliances, up to $1,500 per appliance, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue. If the appliance costs more than $1,500, the remaining amount over $1,500 will be taxed.
“All Missouri cities, counties, and districts participate in the appliance sales tax holiday,” Trish Vincent, director of revenue, said in a statement. “This event not only encourages Missourians to be energy minded but it also contributes to increased revenues for local businesses across the state who sell these appliances.”
Only Energy Star-certified appliances qualify for the deal.
Administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Star is a government-backed symbol for energy efficiency. To earn the certification, the appliances meet energy efficiency standards set by the EPA that ensure they offer significant energy and monetary savings without compromising performance or functionality.
The tax exemption applies both to in-store and online customers made in Missouri during the holiday. Appliances may be purchased for commercial and personal use.
According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the following Energy Star-certified appliances that are exempt from state sales tax include washing machines, clothes dryers, water heaters, dishwashers, air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators, freezers and heat pumps.
Appliances that do not qualify for the sales tax exemption include air filtration systems, bread machines, camping stoves, coffee makers, conventional ovens, cook-tops, deep fryers, dehumidifiers. hot food-holding cabinets, humidifiers, ice makers, microwave ovens, popcorn makers, ranges, reflector ovens, steam cookers, stoves, trash compactors, warming drawers, water softeners and wine coolers.
