shattered window

A woman who went for a walk in Larry G. Crites Memorial Park in Festus returned to her vehicle to find a window smashed and her purse missing. The purse contained cash, credit cards and personal items, Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said.

The theft happened Sunday afternoon, April 3, at the park, which is along Old Hwy. A on the western side of the city.

Lewis said the victim, a 71-year-old Festus woman, reported the incident about 1 p.m.

“She said she’d parked her Jeep Cherokee in the park around noon and went for a walk,” he said. “She parked in a lot off an entrance to the park. When she returned, someone had smashed a window and taken her purse.”

Lewis said he did not have an estimate for the stolen items or the damage to the window.

He warns people against leaving valuables in their vehicles.

“Don’t leave things in your vehicle other people can see,” Lewis said.

He asks anyone with information about the theft to call Festus Police at 636-937-5184.
