Authorities have a “person of interest” in the death of a 3-year-old Barnhart girl, said Lt. Gary Higginbotham of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl was found dead at about 6:20 a.m. this morning (March 7) at her home in the 6600 block of Dry Creek Road in Barnhart, said Higginbotham, who’s also deputy commander with the Greater St. Louis Major Case Squad, which is assisting with the case.

He said the girl’s death is “suspicious.”

In addition, Higginbotham said the girl’s body showed “obvious signs of injury.”

He said the girl’s mother had worked all night and when she returned home this morning, she found the girl there dead and called the Sheriff’s Office.

Higginbotham would not release the girl's name.

He said the person of interest also lives at the Barnhart home.

As of about 3:30 p.m. this afternoon, there were no arrests, he said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office East Zone Office at 636-797-6234 or the Detective Bureau at 636-797-5515.
