A call about a fire on Dec. 17 at the Union Pacific De Soto Railroad Car Shop drew responses from numerous firefighting agencies, but it turned out to be relatively minor, said Racquel Espinoza, the company’s senior director of corporate communications.

She said Union Pacific had not determined how much damage had occurred at the facility, 491 Main St., in De Soto.

“We’re still assessing that,” Espinoza said.

She also said the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

“We had contractors working at our De Soto car facility,” Espinoza said. “They detected smoke and found there was a small fire. It is in an area where they prepare rail cars before they are painted. It’s an area where they do sandblasting.”

The fire occurred about 7:50 a.m., she said.

De Soto Rural Fire Protection District was in charge of the call, but several others fire departments and districts responded as well.

“We certainly appreciate the response of the local fire departments in our community,” Espinoza said.
