Festus Police are seeking a man who allegedly broke into a car parked on Edgewood Lane early this morning (April 11) but ran away without stealing anything when the victim confronted him, Chief Tim Lewis said.
Police believe the same man was found a short time later sleeping in a garage in the same neighborhood, on St. Mary’s Lane, and again ran away when a victim confronted him, Lewis said.
“About 2:30 a.m., we had a report of a car break-in in the 600 block of Edgewood Lane,” he said. “The person who called us said he caught someone trying to break into his Toyota Tundra. The suspect took off into woods. The only description we have is it’s a white male wearing dark clothes.”
The suspect actually got inside the Tundra before the victim confronted him, Lewis said.
“He (the suspect) tried to take some stuff out of the car, but he dropped everything when the victim arrived,” Lewis said. “He was trying to take mostly electronic stuff.”
Lewis said his department received another call at about 6 a.m. from a woman who allegedly found a man fitting the same description in her garage in the 1600 block of St. Mary’s Lane.
“The woman was emptying her trash can and found a man sleeping in her garage and didn’t know who he was,” Lewis said. “He got up and ran away. We’re not sure how he got in.”
Lewis said St. Mary’s Lane is on the other side of the woods from Edgewood Lane and the suspect apparently ended up in the garage after attempting to break into the car.
