De Soto man allegedly steals car from man at knifepoint

Nathanial Cole Wougamon

Nathanial Cole Wougamon, 29, of De Soto has been charged with six felonies after he allegedly stole a man’s car at knifepoint. A man had driven Wougamon from Cape Girardeau to De Soto before the alleged theft, according to court documents.

Wougamon on Aug. 23 was charged with first-degree robbery, vehicle hijacking and first-degree assault or attempted assault of a special victim, all class A felonies punishable by 10 to 30 years or life in prison; and three counts of armed criminal action, an unclassified felony that carries a penalty of three to 15 years in prison, court records show.

The man is considered a special victim because he is older than 60, according to court papers.

As of Monday, Aug. 25, Wougamon was being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, court documents said.

According to the case’s probable-cause statement, Wougamon on Aug. 22 approached a Ford Escape the man was inside at a White Castle restaurant in Cape Girardeau. Wougamon initially asked for money, but after the man gave him some change, Wougamon returned to the car and asked for a ride to Hayti.

However, Wougamon then asked the man to drive him to De Soto. He also allegedly told the man in the Escape that he was a priest and worked at a church, the report said.

The man driving the car said he drove to a home near De Soto, and both he and Wougamon got out of the Escape. Wougamon then allegedly told the man to give him the car keys, and when the man refused, Wougamon said he had a gun and would shoot the man if he didn’t give him the keys, according to the report.

Wougamon then took out a knife, and allegedly held it to the man’s stomach. The man then gave Wougamon the keys, the report said.

Investigators located Wougamon in the stolen Escape in Washington County. He allegedly had a knife like the one that the victim described, and he was wearing clothes similar to the ones seen in surveillance video outside of the White Castle in Cape Girardeau, according to the report.

Wougamon told investigators he had purchased the Escape from an acquaintance in Washington County.
