fatal traffic accident

A 40-year-old Arnold man died after the personal watercraft he was operating collided with another personal watercraft on June 13 in Washington County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol no longer identifies victims of accidents. Washington County Coroner Steve Hatfield identified the Arnold man as Derek Martin.

The report states at 7:18 p.m. a 39-year-old Imperial man was operating a northbound 2002 Polaris personal watercraft and Martin was operating a southbound 2005 Seadoo personal watercraft on Crystal Lake at Woodland Lakes in northwestern Washington County near Sullivan.

The watercraft were performing stunts driving in circular formation toward each other when the front of the Polaris struck Martin, ejecting him into the water, the report said. Martin was pronounced dead by medical personnel on the scene at 8:10 p.m.

Both men were wearing life jackets at the time of the crash, the report said.
