A man providing an estimate for guttering work at a Festus-area home apparently stopped a burglary in progress. The incident occurred at a home in the 11000 block of Harrison Lake Road west of Festus, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The man at the home providing the estimate told investigators that at about 11 a.m. Nov. 8, he saw someone inside the house and thought the person was working on the home. However, the estimator called the homeowner, who said no one was working there at the time, the report said.

When deputies arrived, the estimator told deputies he had not seen the alleged burglar leave. However, the burglar was no longer there, according to the report.

Deputies found a back patio door window shattered. The living room window was open, and a ladder, tools and a shop vacuum were outside underneath the window, the report said.

Tools worth about $50 were stolen, and the damage to the shattered window was estimated at $200, according to the report.

As of Nov. 20, none of the stolen items had been recovered, and no arrests had been made, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Bissell said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 636-797-5515.
