hand holding gun

A 29-year-old man who reportedly was playing with a loaded gun at an Arnold apartment shot himself in the head and died, police reported.

The man, who was from Union, shot himself at about 8:30 p.m. April 22 at an apartment in the 100 block of Telegraph Road and died three days later, said Lt. Tom Leassner of the Arnold Police Department.

He said the man was visiting someone who lives at the Arnold apartment, and they spent much of the day drinking at an Arnold restaurant and bar. After they returned to the apartment, the Union man started playing with a loaded handgun.

Leassner said the man pointed the gun at the floor and pulled the trigger, but no bullet was fired. Then, the man pointed the gun at his head and pulled the trigger, and again it did not discharge a bullet. But, the man pulled the trigger again with the gun pointed at his head, and it went off.

The victim was transported to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in south St. Louis County and died on April 25, Leassner said.
