Dunklin Fire battled a blaze in Pevely that started on a lawn and spread to nearby storage units on Monday afternoon, March 30.

Chief Brad Williams said his district responded about 2 p.m. to the call about a fire outside a mobile home in the 400 block of Baum Drive.

“There was this lady cutting grass with a lawn mower,” he said. “She parked the lawn mower and it started the grass and leaves on fire. She tried moving it to put out the fire and couldn’t. She’s an elderly lady. The fire spread to her nearby shed and to some storage units at a nearby storage business. It took us about 20 minutes to get it under control.”

He said no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire appears to be a malfunction in the lawn mower, Williams said.

“The damages were to contents of the storage units,” he said. “The storage units and the shed were still standing. The mobile home was not affected by the fire.”

Firefighters remained on the scene until approximately 3:30 p.m., he said.

The Herculaneum and Festus fire departments, Antonia and Rock Community fire protection districts and Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District assisted with the call, he said. Jefferson R-7 Fire Protection District covered Dunklin’s calls during the incident.
