woman in handcuffs

A 24-year-old Crystal City woman, handcuffed after a traffic stop, jumped back in her car, kicked the pursuing officer and escaped as her male companion drove at speeds over 100 miles per hour early Sunday morning (Aug. 28) on Truman Boulevard in Crystal City.

The incident began at 1:07 a.m. near Ozark Drive and Church Street when Crystal City Police stopped a black Camaro for having expired temporary license tags, according to Capt. Mike Pruneau.

“The driver identified himself as being from South Hill, Va., but said he doesn’t have a license,” Pruneau said. “The female stated she didn’t have a license. She identified herself as someone else.”

Officers searched the vehicle and found her driver’s license, Pruneau said.

“She was a fugitive from Douglas County for assaulting a police officer, and was new to the area,” he said. “Officers handcuffed her. Then she dove into the car (Camaro) and started kicking.”

The driver took off. The officers pursued.

“They were going by Walmart on Truman Boulevard southbound,” Pruneau said. “The last reading they took was 107 mph and they (the officers) backed down. It was too dangerous.”

Pruneau said warrants will be sought on both suspects for traffic violations, resisting arrest, failure to comply, assault on a police officer and stealing under $500 for taking the $40 handcuffs.
