A High Ridge Fire Protection District firefighter received minor injuries while fighting a brush fire that spread to a shed and mobile home at the 4700 block of Wedgewood Drive in House Springs on March 7.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 1:34 p.m., where the shed, home and a large area of brush on the property were already on fire, Chief John Barton said. There was heavy smoke coming from underneath the home, he said.
“Initial reports were that the home had been unoccupied, but our crews immediately entered the building and performed a search to ensure there were no victims,” Barton said. “The brush fire burned underneath the mobile home and through the floor in several areas, making conditions that much more dangerous because of the risk of collapse, but fortunately there were no victims found.”
The fire was under control by 2:05 p.m., Barton said.
Barton said the firefighter who received minor injuries was treated on the scene by Big River Ambulance District crews, and did not require transport to a hospital.
“The fire was determined to have started outside in the backyard area, possibly intentionally, but there was no evidence of intent to set fire to the structures, and there was nobody at the scene when we arrived,” Barton said.
In addition to Big River Ambulance, High Ridge Fire was assisted by the Antonia, Eureka, Cedar Hill and Fenton fire protection districts on the call.
