A 9 mm pistol recently was stolen from a pickup parked in the 1900 block of McKinley Range in the Northwoods Subdivision in Festus, Police Chief Tim Lewis said Tuesday (Sept. 22).

The victim reported the weapon missing at about 8 a.m. Monday (Sept. 21).

“It looks like sometime within the previous day, the gun was stolen,” Lewis said. “The victim said it was hidden in his truck. The victim thinks the truck was unlocked.”

Lewis said he did not know the pickup’s year, make or model.

He said the pistol is worth an estimated $400.

Lewis said his department received another report of a vehicle break-in that occurred around the same time and in the same vicinity, but nothing appeared to have been stolen in that break-in.

“We had another incident about a block away from this one where someone broke into an unlocked car and went through (its contents), Lewis said, "but the person doesn’t think anything was taken.”

Lewis said he always preaches about not leaving firearms in vehicles.

“Do not leave a gun in a car, locked or unlocked,” he said.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Festus Police at 636-937-3646.
