The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a recent theft of $2,540 in cash from an unlocked vehicle sometime between June 22 and Aug. 1. The victim, who lives in the 900 block of Meramec Lane in the Festus area, said the money was inside an envelope in the vehicle’s glovebox and could have been stolen anywhere she had been during that period, Lt. Gary Higginbotham reported.
The woman said the money was from her income tax refund, and she had placed the envelope with the money inside in the glovebox in June and later that month, on June 22, got some money of it, but then put the envelope back and didn’t notice it missing until Aug. 1. She reported the theft to the Sheriff’s Office the next day, on Aug. 2, the report said.
As of Tuesday (Aug. 30), the money had not been recovered, and there were no suspects or arrests, Higginbotham said. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 636-797-5515.
