The Eureka Police Department has announced that it will take part in the I-44 Summer Speed Campaign that resumes from about 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 7. The campaign was created about three years ago to crack down on speeding on the interstate, Lt. Michael Werges said.
The campaign includes about 20 law enforcement agencies that patrol I-44 from where the interstate enters Missouri at the Oklahoma border through the city of St. Louis. The campaign was started through a partnership between the Eureka and St. Louis County police departments and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and it is now funded through a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation, Werges said.
In 2022, there were 1,057 vehicle fatalities with many of those deaths connected to “aggressive driving,” Eureka Police reported.
The first day of this year’s campaign was on June 16, when officers issued 207 traffic summonses and 171 warnings in about six hours, Eureka Police reported.
The campaign is scheduled to be held a third and final time from about 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 18, Werges said.
