A 66-year-old Eureka man allegedly used a stolen credit card to buy $125 worth of lottery tickets from a machine at the QuikTrip gas station, 290 E. Fourth St. The credit card belonged to a 30-year-old Pacific man who lost the card at Walmart, 131 Eureka Towne Center Drive, Eureka Police reported.
The man who lost the card told police on Oct. 5 that he had lost the card the day before while shopping. He said he was alerted at about 4 p.m. Oct. 4 that the card was used at the gas station, the report said.
An officer reviewed surveillance video at the gas station, and only the Eureka man was allegedly seen using the lottery ticket machine. The officer identified the man through previous encounters, according to the report said.
The man who allegedly used the stolen credit card was seen driving to the gas station in a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt. He was seen going from the car to the lottery ticket machine 13 times between 4:12 p.m. and 6:02 p.m. on Oct. 4, the report said.
A gas station employee called police at about 11:30 a.m. Oct. 6 to report the man seen in the surveillance video was at the station. An officer went to QuikTrip and arrested the man, who allegedly admitted to using the stolen card to buy the tickets and said he made “way too many” transactions, according to the report.
The officer recovered the stolen credit card from the man. The man was then taken to the Police Station, where he was booked and released pending the application for charges, the report said.
Eureka Police will seek a charge against the man through the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for fraudulent use of a credit device and possession of stolen property, Capt. Michael Tapp said.
