A dog died on Aug. 18 in a fire that destroyed a home on Pleasant Valley Terrace in Arnold.

A dog died in a fire that destroyed a home on Pleasant Valley Terrace in Arnold, the Rock Community Fire Protection District reported.

A man and woman escaped the blaze that was reported at about 11:50 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the home in the subdivision off Jeffco Boulevard and near City Hall. The man was out when firefighters arrived at about 11:55 a.m., and the woman came out shortly after their arrival, the report said.

The fire was under control at 12:17 p.m., and the scene was cleared at 2:05 p.m., spokeswoman Alyson Rotter said.

Rock Fire reported the cause of the fire and where it started in the home was still under investigation as of Tuesday, Aug. 19. Rotter said investigator believe the fire was an accident.

The woman was transported to an area hospital as a precautionary measure, Rotter said. No injuries were reported.

The Red Cross was called to assist the man and woman, Rock Fire reported.

Rotter said Rock Fire struck a second alarm to respond to the fire in part due to the heat. She said a total of eight firetrucks responded to the home.

“The heat index at the time of the call was 101 degrees, and when you add a fire into that, it is tough,” she said. “The firefighters were getting exhausted pretty quick. The second alarm allows everyone to go in for about 10 minutes, get out and keep cycling through.”

Antonia, Mehlville and Saline Valley fire protection districts assisted on the call. The Rock Township Ambulance District and Arnold Police also responded to the home.
