De Soto Police are seeking charges against a 35-year-old De Soto man for leaving the scene of an accident after he allegedly hit a pole on the De Soto Walmart parking lot and drove away early Tuesday morning (Dec. 22).

The man was inside the Walmart store at 12862 Hwy. 21 at about 7 p.m. Monday (Dec. 21) when he allegedly had an altercation with an ex-girlfriend who worked at the store, Sgt. Mike McMunn said.

“Apparently they still share a vehicle, and he asked her for the keys, and she said, ‘No’” McMunn said.

The man returned to the store just before 1 a.m. Tuesday and the woman gave him the keys to a red, 2001 Chevy S10 they shared. As he was leaving, he allegedly crashed into one of the yellow poles in front of the market side of Walmart, McMunn said.

McMunn said the man allegedly crashed into the pole on purpose.

“He must have been angry because he hit it so hard the pole was leaning to one side and it pulled up the pavement,” McMunn said.

He said the damage to the parking lot is estimated at $5,000 and $10,000.

The front end of the pickup was severely damaged and the radiator was smashed. A store manager saw the pickup smoking as it traveled down a road behind the Walmart store, McMunn said.

The man was arrested at his home on North Second Street for leaving the scene of an accident, as well as for alleged possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

He was booked and released pending application for warrants, Mc Munn said.
