A 41-year-old Fenton man allegedly stole a car from a High Ridge gas station and later crashed it in St. Louis. The owner of the car unintentionally left his keys inside the vehicle, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Deputies were called on Oct. 7 to the QuikTrip gas station, 1617 Gravois Road, in High Ridge by the victim. He said he saw a man get into his 2008 Nissan Sentra and drive away, the report said.

The victim told deputies he chased the car on foot before it got onto eastbound Gravois Road. He also told deputies someone else saw the Nissan traveling south on Old Sugar Creek Road, according to the report.

Later that day, St. Louis Police located the car through the Flock license-plate camera system. St. Louis Police officers chased the Fenton man and arrested him, but the Nissan appeared to be totaled following a crash, the report said.

The Sheriff’s Office will seek a charge against the man through the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for stealing, spokesman Grant Bissell said.
