Festus man allegedly breaks into home, damages vehicle

David Matthew Schaefer, 38, of Festus allegedly broke into a home in the 1000 block of Savanna Place Drive and damaged a vehicle in the 700 block of Warne Street in Festus. He also allegedly told police he had been inside other homes the night he was arrested, according to court documents.

Schaefer has been charged with first-degree burglary, a class B felony punishable by five to 15 years in prison; and second-degree property damage, a class B misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, court records show.

As of Tuesday, Aug. 19, he was being without bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, court documents said.

According to the case’s probable-cause statement, Festus Police were called at about 1:05 a.m. Aug. 17 to the home on Savanna Place Drive by a man who found Schaefer in the kitchen. Schaefer allegedly ate food from the refrigerator and urinated on the kitchen floor.

A woman and children also were in the home, the report said.

Schaefer was in the kitchen when police arrived, and he was arrested, according to the report.

Officers also believe Schaefer broke a window on a vehicle on Warne Street. An officer allegedly found one of Schaefer’s shoes five houses south from where the window was broken, the report said.
