A Jefferson County woman and man allegedly stole a wallet that another woman accidently left at a Fenton-area gas station. The woman allegedly used the stolen credit cards to purchase items at businesses in High Ridge and the Fenton area, according to court records.

Crystal L. Duckworth, 50, of Cedar Hill has been charged with seven counts of stealing, class D felonies; and three counts of fraudulent use of a credit device, class A misdemeanors. Rodney Dale Maddox, 62, who lives in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton, also has been charged with seven counts of felony stealing and one count of class A misdemeanor stealing, court documents show.

Duckworth is scheduled to appear in Jefferson County Court on Oct. 1. Maddox was arrested on Sept. 5, and as of Sept. 21, he was being held on a $5,000 bond at the Jefferson County Jail in Hillsboro, court records said.

A woman told a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy that on March 14 she put her wallet on the wheel of her vehicle while pumping gas at the Phillips 66 gas station, 1880 Little Brennan Road, in the Jefferson County portion of Fenton. She said she left the gas station without retrieving her wallet, which had $300 in cash and multiple credit cards inside it, according to the case’s probable-cause statement.

Duckworth and Maddox were allegedly seen in surveillance video picking up the wallet and other items at the gas station after the woman left. The two also were seen in surveillance video when Duckworth tried to buy $410.98 worth of items at a business, the report said.

That purchase was declined, but Duckworth was able to purchase items at least three times in businesses in High Ridge and the Fenton area, according to the report.

A deputy located Duckworth and Maddox on March 20, and Duckworth returned the wallet and its contents, the report said.

A class D felony is punishable by up to seven years in prison, and class A misdemeanors carry penalties of up to one year in jail and fines of up to $2,000.
