Crystal City firefighters quickly put out a garage fire at a home in the 100 block of Compton Drive on Monday afternoon, April 18. The department received a call about the fire around 3:15 p.m., and it was extinguished by 3:30 p.m., Fire Chief Tony Bova reported.
“It ended up being a pile of clothes in the corner (of the garage that caught fire),” he said. “There was minimal damage, mainly smoke damage to the garage.”
Bova said the occupants, a mother and young son, were not injured.
As of Tuesday, the cause of the fire had not been determined, but does not appear suspicious, he said.
Firefighters remained on the scene until shortly before 4 p.m., Bova said.
He said the occupants were told to find temporary housing overnight.
“The building commissioner and the owner decided to have the electrical system checked out,” Bova said. “The occupants should be able to return today (April 19). They were staying with her parents.”
He said the Festus and Herculaneum fire departments and the Hematite and Jefferson R-7 fire protection districts helped with the call. The Joachim-Plattin Ambulance District also responded to the scene.
