Crystal City Fire responded to a call of smoke Wednesday afternoon, May 8, at Mercy Jefferson Hospital, but the incident turned out to be minor and hospital staff had addressed it before his department arrived, Chief Tony Bova reported.
He said his department received a call at 1:32 p.m. of smoke at Mercy Jefferson, 1400 Hwy. 61, Crystal City.
Hospital spokesman Joe Poelker confirmed the incident, adding that hospital policies led to staff safely addressing the situation.
“We had an exhaust fan on the roof that started smoking,” he said. “The ventilation system was shut down to prevent any further spread of smoke.”
He said the incident occurred in the Nuclear Medicine Department.
“Some patients and staff were moved to another part of the building,” Poelker said. “After the smoke was cleared, they went back.
“We’re grateful all the co-workers followed procedures and everything was OK.”
