A catalytic converter was cut off a van that had been left for repairs at Dobbs Tire and Auto Center, 1299 W. Fifth St., in Eureka. Surveillance video allegedly showed two men steal the converter, causing about $750 in damage to the 2000 Ford Econoline 500 van, Eureka Police reported.
The theft was reported at about 2 p.m. July 9, the report said.
Video surveillance reportedly showed a dark blue Kia drive onto the parking lot at about 10 p.m. July 8 and park in front of the van. A man allegedly got out of the passenger side of the Kia holding a saw and got under the van, and a man got out of the driver side and kept a lookout, according to the report.
The man who reportedly got under the van appeared to be carrying the converter when he and the other man got back into the Kia and drove away. Officers got the number from the license plate on the Kia, but the plate had been reported stolen off a 2010 Dodge Journey in St. Louis, Eureka Police reported.
As of July 14, the converter had not been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, Sgt. Michael Tapp said. He asks anyone with information about the incident to call Eureka Police at 636-938-6600.
