Eureka Police arrested a 59-year-old Byrnes Mill man for suspicion of driving while intoxicated following an accident on eastbound I-44. The man allegedly admitted to drinking beer and smoking marijuana before the accident, police reported
The man was driving a 2014 Subaru CTK east on I-44 when at about 6:15 p.m. Nov. 26 he hit the side of a 2014 BMW X3 that a 43-year-old Pacific man was driving. No injuries were reported for the driver of the BMW, and both vehicles had minor damage, the report said.
Officers allegedly saw two open cans of Bud Light in the Subaru. The man allegedly said he had consumed eight to nine beers since 4 p.m. and had smoked marijuana, according to the report.
The Eureka Fire Protection District was called to evaluate the man, and he allegedly told firefighters he had consumed 10 beers since 4 p.m. The man also allegedly guaranteed he was over the legal limit for blood-alcohol content and apologized for driving, the report said.
The man was transported to an area hospital for treatment. At the hospital, the man allegedly told officers he drank at home and while driving, according to the report.
He was issued summons to appear in Eureka Municipal Court for alleged DWI and making an improper lane change, Lt. Brett Grittini said.
